Why Pharmacists Counsel Patients

Listen to your pharmacist's directions!

When you go to a pharmacy to fill your prescription or buy over-the-counter drugs, do you go wait to get advice on how to use your medicines? Or are you always in a rush to leave because “the cyclist is waiting”?

If you are in the latter group, you might be endangering your health. It is estimated that 40% of patients may be using their medication inappropriately. This may be because they did not seek guidance, did not understand the instructions that were given, or forgot them altogether.

Evidence shows that adequate information and explanation to the patient increases his chances of using his drugs correctly. Most drugs are safe and effective when used as directed. Pharmacists help to promote safe and effective use of drugs via counseling. During counseling, the pharmacists at Lily will talk to you about:

  • When to take your drugs (what times of the day)
  • How to take your drugs (e.g. with or without food)
  • How long to continue the medication
  • What to expect when you take the drug, and what to do in case of any side effects
  • How other medicines you are taking will affect the new medicines
If you are seeking assistance on buying over-the-counter medicines for use on minor ailments, expect the pharmacist to ask you questions like:
  • What is the age of the person who will take the drug?
  • How long has the person had the complaint?
  • Is the person on any other medication?
Please cooperate in supplying us the information so that we can provide better service to you.
Looking forward to serving you,
The Lily Pharmacy team
